The Garland King

The Castleton Garland and Dunscar Farm National Trust Open Day

No one can say for certain how the Garland originated because it goes back far beyond the memory of man. But on May 29th-Oakapple Day, Castleton comes to a stand still when our King rides though the streets, stopping at a pub or two, wearing a beautiful Stuart uniform with his head and shoulders buried in a great 'beehive' (the Garland) shape of flowers. Closely following is the King's Consort and the girls of the village.

I have not got enough space on this page to go into the details of this fabulous day, but I can say that my family feel really privileged to bare witness to this ancient ceremony and look forward to it every year ...especially the drinking!

Our neighbours at Dunscar Farm as well as running an excellent B & B also play host to The National Trust Open Day. This takes place every May Bank Holiday. The folks at The National Trust have the chance to show you how to do a spot of stone masonry or dry stone walling and reveal what an important job they do with preserving our beautiful countryside. We also sell our amazing hot chocolate there too. Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk for more details.

Dunscar Farm Open Day

National Parks Week (28th July-3rd August 2008)- Your Countryside on a Plate- Chocolate Experience and Open day.

As part of the National Parks Week we are holding a few special events. On Friday 1st August we shall be running one of our very successful 'Chocolate Experiences' from 2-4 pm and on Saturday 2nd August we shall be holding an open day here at Mam Farm from 10am to 4pm. Tickets are £2 each at the door, where we shall give a short demonstration plus treat you to some handmade chocolates and a nice refreshing chocolate drink. Chocolates will also be on sale at a special discount. The Demonstrations will take place every hour on the hour. Because of the size of the workshop we can only let 12 guests in at a time so please arrive with plenty of time. Large groups may want to pre-book a slot

Because we are situated on a S.S.S.I (Site of Special Scientific Interest) we would kindly appreciate it if you could leave your cars at Odin Mine and walk up to us....just think how good the exercise will be! Please contact us with any questions.

For Access Statement please click and scroll. Please note our farm is situated in an area unsuitable for wheelchair use. Sorry.
