The Castleton Garland and Dunscar Farm National Trust Open DayNo one can say for certain how the Garland originated because it goes back far beyond the memory of man. But on May 29th-Oakapple Day, Castleton comes to a stand still when our King rides though the streets, stopping at a pub or two, wearing a beautiful Stuart uniform with his head and shoulders buried in a great 'beehive' (the Garland) shape of flowers. Closely following is the King's Consort and the girls of the village. I have not got enough space on this page to go into the details of this fabulous day, but I can say that my family feel really privileged to bare witness to this ancient ceremony and look forward to it every year ...especially the drinking! Our neighbours at Dunscar Farm as well as running an excellent B & B also play host to The National Trust Open Day. This takes place every May Bank Holiday. The folks at The National Trust have the chance to show you how to do a spot of stone masonry or dry stone walling and reveal what an important job they do with preserving our beautiful countryside. We also sell our amazing hot chocolate there too. Visit www.nationaltrust.org.uk for more details. |
